CALLS TO ACTION

THE MOVEMENT FOR BLACK LIVES:
FATHERS' DAY BAILOUT

bailout.jpg
The Movement for Black Lives ran a beautiful fundraising campaign for Mothers Day to free mothers unable to make bail - so they could spend time with their families for the holiday. Now support is needed to bail out fathers and family members this month in celebration of Father’s Day, Juneteenth and Pride.

One in nine Black children have a parent who is incarcerated. This Father’s Day we want to make sure that at least some of those children have the opportunity to spend the day with their Fathers. Help bring Fathers, in all their varieties, home this Father’s Day.

There are more Black men in prison than there were enslaved in 1850 and over the last three decades the percentage of Black women incarcerated has increased by 700%. Help free our black community members from modern day bondage this Juneteenth.

Black LGBTQ and gender nonconforming people are overrepresented in local jails and are more likely to be abused once in jail. Help fight back against injustice in celebration of Pride.

DONATE HERE TODAY!

ALSO, GOOD NEWS ON A RELATED FRONT
New Mexico has shifted its pretrial release and detention decisions from the conventional unjust approach -based on who could come up with the money to buy his or her way out of jail to instead of on evidence of individual risk of dangerousness or flight, served neither community safety nor constitutional rights of accused citizens,” said Supreme Court Justice Charles Daniels. New Mexico had the highest jail incarceration rate in the country with 341 per 100,000 residents in 2013 — the latest year of federal data tracking all local jail populations.

DONATE YOUR BOOKS THIS MLK DAY
In the United States, 250,000 juveniles do not have regular access to library services while either incarcerated or detained. More than one-third of juvenile offenders read below the fourth grade reading level and about two-thirds of prison inmates are high school dropouts. With this in mind, it is crucial to recognize the need for libraries and literacy in juvenile correctional facilities. The inclusion of libraries and literacy programs in JDC are a vital component in providing incarcerated youth with the knowledge, skills and motivation to educate themselves and bring rates of criminal recidivism down as well as the disproportionate numbers of incarcerated youth that is made up of mostly racial minorities.

This event is being held to collect great  books  for young people that have limited access to the literary tools they need to open their imagination and expand their minds.

They will be donated to the Juvenile Justice Services Department of CYFD and administered to youth at Camino Nuevo and YDDC Correctional Facilities in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

*PLEASE DROP ALL DONATIONS OFF EARTH CARE AT LA ZONA, AT THE CORNER OF JAGUAR AND COUNTRY CLUB ROAD ANYTIME THIS WEEK

And if you have time, join local water protectors afterwards at the New Mexico State Legislative Session opening to call on our public officials to stand up for Chaco!

We hope you'll join us in delivering our messages (petitions, letters, prayers, and speak out) to State Director Lueders.
