Our youth started a Santa Fe Chapter of Food Not Bombs in 2009 as one of the Youth Allies Organizing Projects. The project was created in partnership with young people experiencing homelessness who were part of our Youth Action Network at the time. They asked our youth organizers for support in getting meals going. Our young leaders learned about the international Food Not Bombs movement, learned how to cook meals for large groups, and learned about healthy eating, growing food, and FOOD WASTE.
The project continues to this day and in addition to weekly community meals - includes all kinds of initiatives from our youth including food drives, cooking lessons, movie screenings, peer education about militarism, and health and nutrition education - depending on our youth leaders' interests in any given year.

The project under Youth Allies initially included weekly dumpster diving runs at local grocery stores. It then shifted to a relationship with a Food Depot weekly meal drop-off where we would salvage the left over food that the participating families didn't take - use what we could for meals and compost the rest. The volume of unusable food was quite high - so the youth connected with a local pig farmer - who picked up the "waste" food and fed it to his animals. At this point, we are happy to say our community has really improved its food waste situation and so there is little food that goes into grocery store dumpsters. Instead, it is picked up by one of our partners - The Food Depot where it is distributed to dozens of agencies working on hunger relief -- including our very own Food Not Bombs chapter.
The project's location has also shifted throughout the years - we've served at Cathedral Park, on the Plaza, at Ashbaugh Park, by Pete's Pets, and now we serve weekly meals at the De Vargas Park.
The current iteration of Food Not Bombs is a partnership with Los Amigos Del Parke. Los Amigos Del Parke is a volunteer organization that serves hot food and coffee every single morning to folks at the park - including many folks from the day laborer community as well as folks experiencing homelessness.
We take care of the Sunday meal every week. And it is our custom to make breakfast burritos.
Some weeks we need volunteers to help cover the meal due to scheduling conflicts with other program activities. If you have the means to volunteer, please let us know and we'd be grateful to work you in to the rotation or have you on our backup list when there is need.
